Cycle to Work Scheme Benefits

Make cycling to work more affordable while creating value for your workforce and business. A qualifying Cycle to Work Scheme can help employees manage the cost of a bike and give employers another way to encourage active and sustainable commuting.

01

What employees can gain

Lower the overall cost

With an eligible salary sacrifice arrangement, payments are taken from gross salary. This can reduce the amount of Income Tax and employee National Insurance payable, making cycling equipment more affordable.

Pay in manageable instalments

Spread the cost across an agreed period through regular payroll deductions, rather than funding the full purchase from take-home pay at the outset.

Choose suitable cycling equipment

Use the scheme towards an eligible bicycle or electric bike, together with qualifying accessories designed to support safer and more convenient journeys.

Build healthier commuting habits

Cycling into work provides an opportunity for regular physical activity, helping employees incorporate movement into their everyday routine.

02

Why employers may benefit

Potential payroll savings

Where a valid salary sacrifice reduces relevant earnings, the business may pay less employer Class 1 National Insurance. The result depends on each employee's circumstances and payroll figures.

Strengthen the employee offer

Adding a practical commuting benefit can help the organisation stand out when recruiting and contribute to a more attractive overall employment package.

Support a healthier workforce

Making everyday cycling easier can encourage active travel and contribute to an employee wellbeing strategy.

Encourage greener journeys

Supporting journeys by bicycle can help reduce reliance on private cars and contribute to the company's wider environmental objectives.

Make scheme management easier

Working with a scheme provider can simplify equipment selection, application processing and payroll coordination. Check any administration charges before choosing a provider.

03

Key points to check

Before joining or introducing a scheme, employers and employees should review the eligibility rules and agree on how the salary sacrifice and hire arrangement will operate.

  • Provide access to the scheme across the workforce in accordance with the applicable eligibility requirements.
  • Ensure the bicycle satisfies the relevant tax rules, including the requirement for qualifying work-related journeys to be its main use.
  • Obtain the employee's agreement before introducing salary sacrifice and document the revised pay arrangements appropriately.
  • Check that the salary reduction does not take pay below the applicable National Minimum Wage or National Living Wage.
  • Review the arrangements at the end of the hire period. Ownership is not automatically transferred to the employee, and any extension or transfer should follow the applicable rules.

Important information: This calculator uses the 2026/27 Income Tax bands and an annualised estimate of employee National Insurance, assuming a standard Category A employee. It compares estimated tax and NI before and after the additional salary sacrifice. Actual results can differ because of pay periods, tax codes, NI category, pension arrangements, benefits, student loans and changes in tax rules. For hire periods longer than 12 months, the calculator assumes the current tax rules remain unchanged. End-of-hire payments may not qualify for tax relief. The calculation does not confirm that your employer's scheme is eligible.
